Sahara Power
Established in 2001, the company's core business lies in
the acquisition, repair, maintenance and operation of power plants. Between
2001 and 2004, the company played an active role in the Emergency Power
Projects embarked on by the then Nigerian Electric Power Authority (NEPA)
presently known as the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).
In 2006, the company partnered with a major international
power company, Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), to enable it to
provide a wider range of solutions to the entire power sector chain throughout
the region.
The resulting company KEPCO Energy Resource Ltd. (KERL)
carried out major repairs to two boilers in Egbin Power Plant, Lagos State.
Egbin has an installed capacity of 1320MW, but in 2006 could only generate
880MW. The work carried out by KERL added 440MW, restoring the plant to full
capacity.
KERL is presently engineering a 1350MW Power Plant, to be installed in
the Lagos area. The plant when built will consist of 3 - 450MW combined cycle
power blocks.
NG Power Limited, an affiliate of KERL, is presently carrying out operation and
maintenance of Omoku Power Plant. The Plant is a 150MW generating station which
consists of six open cycle gas turbines, each with an installed generating
capacity of 25 MW. The gas turbines are GE Nuovo Pignone model MS 5001 PA. The
generating station came online in December 2006 with four turbine units at the
start, while the other two came up a year later. The power generated is
transmitted directly to the control center in Port-Harcourt (Ogindipa) via 132
KVA feeder lines. In addition, the power station directly exports power to
neighboring communities of Okposi, Ndoni and Kirigene, among others.

Sahara Power in 2013 acquired assets in Nigeria’s power
sector under the privatisation programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria
which led to transfer of former PHCN assets to private investors on November 1,
2013.
Working through a number of Special Purpose Vehicles
(SPV), Sahara successfully acquired majority shareholding stakes in two (2) of
the PHCN assets that were sold by the Nigerian Government, namely Egbin Power
station - the largest Power Generation Plant in Nigeria - and Ikeja Electricity
Distribution Company - the largest power distribution network in Nigeria.
The NEDC/KEPCO Consortium emerged as the majority
shareholders of the former Ikeja Distribution Company and Egbin Power Plant
respectively. The consortium which has the Korean Electric Power Corporation
(KEPCO) as technical partners is committed to delivering efficient, affordable
and sustainable power supply in the near future through investments in new
technology, infrastructure upgrade and human capital development.
